Pros and Cons to Online Communications

Hi Everyone!

What I would like you to do today is create a post in essay form expressing what you feel are the pros and cons to online communication. Vist all forms of online communication (e-mail, chat rooms, blogs, instant messaging). After you post your blog you must then have a 3 part conversation with any student from either period 1 or 6 discussing their post with them. Each student needs to initiate a conversation - if a different student begins a conversation with you, that does not count towards your three-way communication.

You will need to register on the site to post. Thanks - any questions, see me.

There are many pros and cons to communicating on the internet. Some types of online communication include instant messenging, email, chat rooms, and blogs. Some pros to communicating through email are that it is faster, easier, cheaper, and it enables people to communicate with people around the world or country. A negative part to email communication is that it can't be completed if the internet is down, and some people don't always check their email which makes communication harder. Other online communication benefits are found through instant messenging and chat rooms. In these forms of communication people can have live conversations with others over the web in one on one conversations or group conversations. Pros to this type of communication include that it is cheaper, it leaves the phone free, and one can talk to multiple people at once. Cons to this system of communication are that it can leave people vulnerable to online predators in chat rooms and on instant messenging programs. This is because with screen names people don't know who they're talking to and predators can get personal information from people which can negatively effect them.A last form of online communication includes blogging and blogs. With these online journals or diaries people can express themselves and interact with others and talk with people about the same issue. This is a beneficial type of communication because it allows communication with many people in different places over the same topic which interests the people. The cons of blogging are that they are public diaries so personal information can't be placed on them, and some are only open to a small group of people which does not allow many to participate. Communicating on line is a great advancement which allows communication among people in faster, cheaper, easier, and more advanced ways.

online communication can be both good and bad. there are four forms of online communication, e-mail, chat rooms, blogs, and instant messaging. In my oppion e-mail and instant messaging are the safest forms of online communication. Instant messaging asks you if you want to allow a person to talk to you before they allow them in unless you have them saved. for both e-mail and instant messaging someone must know your screen name to talk to you. In chat rooms you dont need to know the person, if they are there you can talk to them. In a blog you have to be careful with what you say because you dont know who will read it, anyone can.

here are what i think the pros and cons to online communication. Here are 4 major ways of communications online e-mail, chat rooms, blogs, instant messaging. These things can be both good and bad. First, they are a quick to get in touch with people with out wasting paper. Although ifr you send so much time in frount of a computer it hurts your eyes for staring at the screen and, you should be excersisingor doing something better for your health. In my oppion nemail is the safest out of these four ways to communicate. you are not talking consitintly to the same person and you have to know the person to get their screenname.

On blog you might not know the person in and they could be a stranger. if you put out something ab out ourself any one can read it they do not need to have your permission. You have to be careful what you say.

Chat rooms is a place where a group of people are anyone could be in there. you must be careful who you talk to because the could be a serial killer.

all in all these things could be an advantage or disadvantage, be careful.

How online communication can be bad or good is it depends what online coummnication you choose to go on and things you tell about yourself to others. Mostly if someone chooses to communicate on anything that has e-mail or IM or blogs mostly anything that anyone choses something to write about them on the internet or talk about themselfes to othere people then there are more chances of being a bad thing. Where people will mostly find out alot about you. Mostly the bad things are e-mailing someone that you don't know or telling people alot about you that are personal or if someone is knows you really wellit sometimes won't turn out so good if they always tell private information about you on either Im, e-mail, blogs, ext. Some of the good things that you can do or help yourself is tomaybe sometimes block people that you don't know. Or don't give them inportant information about you. Or logon to things that are a little saver so that you can be safe and it won't be as dangerouse. It's also inportant to read what site your on or what you are logging in to before you do it. The most real problem is people giving out inportany information or saying things about other people once they know that information they will right anything about you and in those cases it gets worse. It's always good to stay on safe sites but you should always be careful where you are logging in to and is it safe where you are logging in to. so you can still have fun with your friends talking in Im, E-mails but becareful what you logged in to and if it's safe.

Erin Leyson said...

Courtney I agree with what you say in that those types of communication are safe but don't they leave people vul;nerable to predators still?

Although there are many pros to online communication including convienience, file sharing, and the ability to change something before you send it to who your talking to so you don't sound like an idiot, there are also many cons. Including, that's right, child predators. Every day you hear on the news something new about a child being lured on myspace or AIM or anything else. To me, most of this is probably the news trying to scare us because that's the only reason the news is eciting most of the time, and it is probably very very rare that anything ecer happens, the danger is still there. However, overall I think it is convienient and a good idea as long as you know the person that you are talking to.

Tori Cazes said...

yes they do. the internet is very vonerable for preditors you have to be careful who you talk to.

erin- yes they can still leave you vulnerable but they are safer than the others are.

Erin Leyson said...

Tori, I thoguht you're "talking to a killer in a chat room " was funny. Ha, ha, ha. I also thoguht that was a good point of not wasting paper. Do you think email should be promoted to help the environment?

There are many pros and cons to communication over the internet. One plus is that you can communicate with people over long distances. For example the military uses online comunication to comunicate overseas. A downside is when online messages may pick up viruses that will spreasd to werever the message goes. There is also the possibility of people obtaining your personal information.

Although there are many problems in communicating online there are also many pros too. Some ways of communicating online are AiM, email, and blogging. A con with all of this is that you you may take something in the wrong way. Because you dont know the persons tone. Because of this someone may take a funny comment the qworng way. Also another problem is sometimes the messges dont get to the person. Like in email sometimes it does not deliver. Although all of these are bad, there are some pros. Now if you are on the computer you can just aim some one with out having to pick up the phone. Also, you can get alot more done in less time on the computer. So as you can see there are many pros and cons of using online comunication but the most important thing is to stay safe and think smart.

Courtney said...

erin and tori- no matter how much people use e-mail they will always use letters more. it is fun to get a card in the mail and not all people know how to use e-mail.

Erin Leyson said...

Monika, I think you have a really goodpoint that the safety of online communication depends on the amount of personal information given, so do you mena that the safety of online communication depends on the user?

there are lots of pros for online communication as well as a few cons. first of all, email and instant messaging is faster, and cheaper than actual mail. another pro is that it uses no paper, therefore saving the rainforest. it can connect people that are halfway around the world and could not be otherwise reached. a pro is that with less actual mail being sent, there are less jobs for mailmen and that means that there will be layoffs. chat rooms are a good thing because they let people with a common interest communicate with each other in an intelligent setting. on the other hand, you have no way of knowing if these people really are who they claim to be and that could be a possibly dangerous situation.

Courtney said...

There are many problems with communicating through online messaging, chat roooms, etc. There are also many high points as well. Some pros about communicating on the internet is that you can meet new people through the internet. Although that is not always a good thing, there are safe ways to meet new people online. Many people communicate through places like myspace or facebook, and although they can be dangerous, there are preventions for keeping online predators away. Many people also communicate through instant messaging. To do this, a screen name is needed, which is a form of safety in my opinion. E-mail is also a good way to comminicate, it just takes a little longer to communicate because of the process one needs to go through. In my opinion, email is safer than instant messaging because of the fact that if an email looks wierd, you can delete it and not worry about it again. I also believe that online chat rooms are more dangerous than instant messaging because people post so much more personal information on those websites that they are just waiting to get into trouble. Those are some ideas that i believe

There are many ways to communicate online and many pros and cons for each. All of them save you lots of money. You dont have to buy paper so you are also helping the environment buy saving trees. When you send a letter you have to wait for the letter to get to your house but when you communicate online it is instant even if it is across the world. The only problem with chatting online is you done have a clue who you are talking to. you are also taking away peoples jobs like the mail man. when you open emails that have virus in it. those virus can mess up your coputer and cost you lots of money.

The pros to online communications in my own opinion contradict with the cons in many ways. The pros are that it is fast, efficient, and usually free, with the exception of AOL. The cons are that with most communicating online is that you don't know who you’re talking to. When you’re talking to someone who met in a myspace chat room or something like that you don’t know if they’re hacking into your computer central system and stealing your credit card information and much more. They could also be sending you a virus that would decapitate your virus blocking system you have installed within minutes and then set up there own virus blocker on your computer so they will have access to the sites you visited and your information. And because most people don’t remember what kind of virus blocker they downloaded they will just assume that is the one they originally downloaded. I am not saying don't chat online, and also the odds of what I am saying of happening aren't very likely, it still happens so when people chat online they should be careful, and know who they're chatting with.

I think that there are both pros and cons to online communication. First of all there is a few different ways of online communication they are e-mail, blogging, chat rooms and instant messenging. There are both pros and cons to all of these. First the pros are that you can talk to people anywhere in the world and it is fast and easy. One con of online communication is that it is not the safest way to communicate. When you post on a blog you can't tell who is going to read it and who is not. E-mail and instant messenging is a lot safer because the messege is only sent to the person you are having a conversation with. Another con is that if there is a blackout or a bad connection you can't get on to the internet and therefore you can't communicate online.

Anonymous said...

There are many pros and cons to Online Communications. First off, using Instant Messenger is a excellent way to communicate over the internet. It is a fast(instant), free and easy way to talk to, basically, everyone. However, equipt with Instant Messenging are Chat Rooms. In Chat Rooms you can talk with more than one person, but also can be fooled by people on the other end of the computer. It is extremely easy to lie and say you are someone else over the internet. This is thenumber one cause of kidnappings and such. So there you have it, two examples of how the internet is our friend, as well as our foe.

Communication through the internet can have many different pros and cons. I would have to say that I think there are more pros than cons rearding communication on the internet. The pros are being able to talk to people faster, easier, and without paying any money to do any of that. Some of the most popular forms of communication on the internet is through email, chat rooms, blogging, and instant messaging. There are some other ways that people can communicate but those are the most common ones that are used by people. These are all conveniant for people because it is another way to talk if you don't want to or are unable to talk on the phone. These forms of communication on the internet can also have some cons. Some of those cons would be that not everyone is online at the same time which means you can't talk to each other and when using something like a chat room, you open yourself up to online predators. Online predators have access to everything on the internet that you do and they try to do things to get in other peoples heads. That is why communication on the internet can sometimes be dangerous. All in all, I think there are more positive things to communicating online than there are negative things.

There are many pros and cons to communtcating online. One pro would be that you can meet new people, but a con would be that you might meet people that are not good. You probably have been hearing many news stories about young gilrs getting raped after meeting new people online who they think they know but really don't. One pro to communicating online would be that you can talk to people that are long distance. For example if your friends moves to another state you can still keep in touch with them but talking to them online. Using Insatnat Messageing is a safe way to communicate with people. With using email is good to be able to send messages to people with attachements and files form your computer and is an eaiser way to send picturee. But if you sned someone and it is an important message they might not get it on time. You can also get viruses by using email or myspace or facebook so you would hvae to be careful about that. By using instant messaging you can communticate with people and you can resopnd to the other person right away. A pro to using chat rooms is you cna talk to more than one person at time and all have the same conversation. Using online communication is a great way to communicate with people if you know what to use and how to use it.

There are many good and bad things about communicating online. You can cummunicate online through e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, blogs and many other ways. Pros to communicating is that it is fast, it costs no money and you can do it wherever there is a computer. The main con for communicating online is that you may not always know who you are talking to. You may wonder into a chat room and find yourself talking with strangers. Hopefully none of the strangers are trying to do anything bad to you. E-mail and instand messaging are much more safe than chat roooms. They can be a great way to communicate with friends or anyone you know. Overall, there can be many more pros to online communication if you are careful using them.

There are multiple pros and cons to communication on the internet. The many ways for one to communicate on the computer is astonishing. For example, Instant Messaging, email, blogs, chat rooms and online videos are all ways for one to communicate to another online. The Pros and the Cons vary greatly. Some pros to communication online are that it is very fast, instantanious many times, it is relitivly inexpensive, for a few people it may seem like an impossible task but for many in this age it is extremly easy, and anyone from anywhere can talk to anyone from anywhere else in the world. The Pros of instant messaging and chat rooms are that the people communicating can view responses within miliseconds of it actually being said. It also has a sense of uniqueness, because you can personalize things such as fonts and for instant messaging, infos. Not to mention, depending on the type of internet you have, the phone can remain open for important unexpected calls. However, there are also cons to this type of communication. Anyone can be in the same chatroom as you. Weither its your best friend from school, or someone you met two times during a summer, or someone just wanting a new friend, or even a killer. Anyone can say anything about themselves that can be a lie. Thus communication this way can be very dangerous if one is not careful. Communication via Email is very fast and cheap. Many email accounts today can be set up for free and any amount of emails can be sent for free. Also, again like the instant messaging, the phones remain clear. Also, emails can be sitting waiting there for you when you return home for example. The cons of using email are that, you never know when a computer or internet may go down and email becomes impossible for one person so a response is not recieved. The last form of communication are blogs. Blogs are much like online diaries and the pros for a blog is that numerous people can comment on a specific topic and can read the responses of others. Just like this one!!! However, the cons are that anyone can read what you write in a blog, so things such as private imformation must be sure to stay clear from a blog for safty issues. There are many forms of online communication that taking part at this very momment, each with its good points and bad points.

There are alot of pros of communication via the internet. To start, alot of people find that e-mail is alot quicker and easier rather than writing a letter and going through the trouble of envelopes and postage. It is a way of receiving information, sending it, and forwarding it to others. Another perk of online communication is the ever popular "AIM", which enables a person to type whatever they want to another person and get a response almost immediatly. It's a fun and fast way of talking to people in the moment without actually being with them. Chat rooms are also a popular way of talking to people in the moment with the exception that it can be several people at once, which is convenient to many. Blogs are a way of writing your opinions on a matter and getting a response from people with either the same opinion or a totally different one. They are good for several things, especially expressing yourself. Another pro of online communication is the price. Most of these services are completely free, however some may have a small pricetag but it is a good alternative to the old-fashioned way of writing things to people.
There are, however, alot of cons to online communications. Alot of people are concerned with issues of privacy. AIM is a place where you can communicate easily, but sometimes it gets out of hand and people you don't want to talk to can end up getting your screen name and finding the information in your profile. Sometimes, with the correct equipment/websites, people can even find your location just from talking to them online without you even telling them. E-mail is infamous for junk mail and among that junk mail could be viruses that could slow down your computer and/or completely ruin it. Chat rooms are fun but are sometimes filled with people who aren't out to do you any good; people who can find out information about you that you don't want them knowing, such as financial status or personal things. Blogs are, in my opinions, the least harmful of the other three ways to communicate, but sometimes you'll get the responses you don't want to hear. Altogether i think that people use the internet as a way of communicating at their own risks.

my pros and cons of the communications of instant messenging, email, chat rooms, and blogs are all mostly the same. i think instant messenging is a very good way to talk to your friends about anything really. you also would get a chance to talk to friends who live in different towns or states. its also faster and easier to do. but my only con would be that people who you don't know find out information about you that you only you intended your to see. also the same thing with the chat room in my opinion is that their are many good things and some bad things too. then their is emailing which i think is really good for reminders, cards, and longer message that have an intend on being saved. the only bad is if your email is intercepted by someone else. but its also slow and is good for send things around the world. then my last topic is blogs. i think blogs are good for showing your opinions. its also fast and can be used to send out messages around the world.

Using online communcation is a great way to communicate with people throughout the world. It's cheap and convenient. It's also fast and easy to use. These kind of communication programs don't require you to leave your home, or pick up the phone. As good and as useful online cummication sources are, it also has its pros. It can be dangerous for young adults to use. The internet can be just like a whole other world and it's very easy to get lost and wind up in places you shouldn't be. Which is important for viewers who are under-age and unexperienced to watch who they are talking to online and make sure you are under a secure connection. When using online commucation you should be appropriate and well behaved, the content that you post can be viewed by anyone who wishes to see it. Instant messaging is also a good way to transmit information. You may change your personal settings to fit your privacy standards and only allow certain people to view you as being visible. All in all, not every online communication source is reliable and trustworthy. You should be wise when choosing the communication program of your choice.

Justin Canny said...

There are many reasons why comunicating on the internet could be both bad and good. Communicating on the internet by using communication systems, like AiM, E-mail and chat rooms to stay in touch with friends or family. This way is much easier then writing a letter and waiting days from a response to your letter. The communication over the internet is faster then writing your average letter and you also don't have to worry about the expence of stamps. Although communicating over the internet is a fast, easy, cheap way to stay in touch there are also many dangers to this way of communication. The cons to this type of communication is that although most people feel that they are protected from the dangers of the internet they really aren't. Even when you feel that you are just having a communication with one of your friends in a chat room, you don't even know if its really them if you are communicating for the first time. People could hide their identity behind a screen name, while you believe that your talking to one of your friends. Or someone else could enter the chat room and listen to your conversation without you even knowing. When you are talking on AiM someone could just start talking to you and act like your best friend because you just don't know what kind of person your talking to. Communicating through e-mail is still even dangerous. You could get ramdom messages with viruses that could take away precious or personal information. With all communication this is possible, but it is more likly to happen through e-mail. With screen names a person could make a very small change that makes it look like your talking to the same person. Finally, Communicating through the internet could be both good and bad, but if you choose to communicate through the internet just use caustion and make sure you know who you are talking to.

The internet is now allowing us to talk and communicate in ways that we were not able to fifty years ago. Some of the forms of cmmunication that we have are chat rooms, blogs, e-mails and instant messaging. All these things allow use to communicate faster, but each one has its own pros and cons. The pros to e-mailing are that you can send something to a person in a matter of minutes and as long as you have the right address it can not get confused and put into someone elses "mailbox". The con to e-mail is not everyone has a e-mail address or has excess to the internet 24/7, so they might not be able to answer you right away or in that case ever get to check the message you sent them in an apropriate ammount of time. Instant messaging is also another way of online communication. The pro to this is as long as you are online and do not have an away message you can hold a conversation and get any response back in an instant. The con about instant messaging is that you can never be really sure who you are talking to. People can pretend to be other people if they have that persons log in name and password, and since they you are not physically seeing thatyou are talking to you can not be 100% certain that they arebeing who they actually say they are. Another type of communication is chat rooms. Chat rooms pros are that you can have a whole conversation with more than one friend where you can all contribute to it at the same time. The cons about chat rooms though are that alot of predatotrs tend to go to these. The last type of communication is blogs. The pros about blogs are that you can comment on other peoples things and start conversations. The cons about blogs though are that everyone can see what you are typing unless it is an invitation only blog. All these types of communication allow us to have more than one way to talk to other people
