Pros and Cons to Comminicating Online

There are various ways to communicate online, such as email, chat rooms, IM, and blogs. These online communications are popular among teens, family members, friends, and businesses. Many Websites such as Yahoo! Messenger, Google, AOL, Facebook, and MySpace host these functions and enable a user to communicate online.

Email is the most popular form of communication online. I also feel that it is the safest because one does not need to use the same display name as their real name making it so that the user is completely anonymous to unwanted people and organizations. Some pros to Email is that it is safe, delivers messages quickly, has a low cost, easy accessibility due to the fact that one can usually access his or her email on numerous computer, it is convenient because it can be read when ever convenient to the reader and sent whenever it is convenient to the sender, and finally email can be easily managed. Some cons of email is that the sender does not always get the immediate response they are looking for. Also, they require a more lengthy response and therefore, more time and thought than a text or an IM. Spam messages and advertisements is another con.

Chat rooms are another form of online communication. I feel that they are the most dangerous form of online communication that there is. It is unsafe due to the fact that you never know who is behind the computer or screen name that you are talking to. The person can lie about their name and age and you will never know. Also, on chat rooms personal information can be sent out for anyone in the chat room can see. There are not many rules or regulations to make chat rooms safer. However, there are some pros to this form of communication. For one they are usually specialized so that all participants are given a chance to talk about a particular topic and find out how other people feel about it too. Also, it provides an immediate response to your comments so you do not have to wait and check again later. It is an easy way to get to know people and stay in touch with old friends.

Instant messaging is a private way to communicate one on one with a person over the Internet. I feel that it is a safe way to stay in touch with others if one is smart about their actions. Some pros are that it is private so that no one but the person you are talking to can see your information. It is also and immediate way to carry on a conversation with a person and can be over and extended period of time or a short as two minutes. However, some cons would be like chat rooms one can never really be sure of who they are talking to and unlike chats you can only have a conversation with one person at a time.

A blog is an Internet diary in which one can post a message expressing his or her feelings on a particular topic. Therefore, some pros would be that you can express your views online for others to see without them having to know who you are because your display name does not have to be your real name. Also, you can read other peoples views on the same topic as well. However, some cons are that you do not get immediate responses and everyone can see what you post.

Overall, I feel that online communications is a fast and easy way to communicate with other people and proves to very convenient. However, I also feel that it can be very dangerous if it is used incorrectly.
